Tradesmans Arms Plymouth

Tucked away in a rougher patch of Plymouth, The Tradesmans Arms doesn’t try to be anything it’s not—and thank God, because it wouldn’t pull it off. It’s the kind of place you only end up in because you took a wrong turn or lost a bet. From the outside, it gives off prison-block energy. Inside, it doesn’t get much better.

About The Tradesmans Arms Plymouth

The layout is aggressively square. For some, that’s a red flag. For others, it just means every corner is equally hard to escape from. The drinks menu is straight from the student union circa 2004: fizzy lager, warm cider, and a vodka that probably doubles as paint stripper. No frills, no charm, no craft ale nonsense, just pure, bleak efficiency. Jurassic Park was on the telly, which at least offered a break from staring into the void.

Tradesmans Arms Plymouth

There’s a certain honesty to it, in the same way a broken-down car with a ‘for sale’ sign is honest. You know exactly what you’re getting. No one’s coming here for a gastropub experience or ambient lighting. It’s a drinking den for regulars, murderers, and the occasional passer-by too curious for their own good.

A Brief History of The Tradesmans Arms Plymouth

As for its history, there’s little of note unless you count the painted over nicotine-stained wallpaper and a steady stream of bar fights. Once a working-class boozer tied to the tradesmen of the area, it’s since become a holding pen for the weird and the weary. Whatever soul it had has long since been drowned in house doubles and sticky floors.
